For a while I've been debating whether git or hg was the better choice for our upstream OSUNIX project.   About a week ago my decision process became a no-brainer.  The guys from bitbucket and the overall mercurial community is exactly the type of people we want to be aligned with.  (fingers crossed) So a big thanks to those guys for setting up our fork of onnv-gate..

There still needs testing and commit policies before it's really launched, but having one less thing to worry about is great.

So.. lets actually get to the point of this post.. the bitbucket team has secretly been working on a new site built for the community. So without further adue..  Take a look at the preview and give some feedback.. the mercurial guys would love to know..

Where is OSUNIX?

So.. why has it been quiet.. I've been busy busy trying to not only fix things on the big TODO list, but also making the official public TODO list

Still a work in progress and the next thing I need to do is consolidate and push my solaris overlay.  From there it'll be decoupling pkgcore,smart package manager and xar from OSUNIX and the migration paths can begin.. Wait.. before I forget.. I'll need to finish building th kernel and about 500 ebuilds.. so.. we're not talking tomorrow..

With FOSDEM just days away.. I'm frantically trying to get the project to a bootable state.. I have this feeling I'll be working late nights.. possibly before *and* after so that OSUNIX keeps moving towards production ready.

Joerg Schilling - Thank you

I want to start this by giving a big thanks to Joerg Schilling who despite popular myth is actually imho *very* interesting to talk with and share ideas. (Yes this is the same Joerg Schilling from cdrecord)

I've had two in-person discussions with Joerg in the past week and all I can say is good things.  He's been a delight to talk with and bounce ideas back and forth.  We are both highly interested in building a community around OpenSolaris technology and also making an entirely open source based distribution.  While I'm still uncertain what if any cooperation, I know I'll help in any way I can.

Some of the main things we've discussed is "Why hasn't anyone been able to do this before?"  From my perspective I know it takes a different sort of skill to write an SEO optimized site or managing an online marketing campaign vs writing c code.  I've done both the SEO and CPC marketing resarch and optimistically will be able to drive 100-300 people per day to the OSUNIX project.  From there people will have a choice which projects they find interesting and would like to watch or take part in.

So hopefully this clears up a bit of the bad prJoerg Shilling has been getting over the years..  I'll leave comments open and happy to relay any non-idiot questions/requests to Joerg..
